Wool Mittens
Welcome to Wool Mittens. Mittens have been around for nearly a thousand years. Their origin can be traced back to Eastern Europe. Even though mittens were once made with cotton cloth nowadays mittens are mostly made out of wool. Wool mittens are different from gloves in that, instead of having separate sheaths for the fingers, the fingers have only one sheath to cover them and the thumb will usually have a separate compartment.
The advantage of the fingers being in one place is that it helps generate heat better than a glove which of course helps in the overall comfort and warmth of the hand. Wool mittens can be made from machine woven material or hand made material. Certain types of hand made wool mittens are very popular because of the incredible patterns that can be found on them. There are even old traditions in some Norwegian countries where they have been making incredible hand made wool mittens that have been passed down for many generations.
Because of the incredible warmth giving quality of wool mittens, they are a popular clothing item for infants and children. There is even children’s mittens that can be attached to the jacket or sweater so that it doesn’t get lost when they come off. Some wool mittens have such a thick layer of wool that they are almost water proof.
Wool mittens like some other type of clothing items can differ in style and design based on the culture they come from. You can see differences in the knitting patterns and designs, for example wool mittens from Russia will be a little different from ones that are made in Austria or Norway.
As mentioned earlier wool mittens are popular with children. There are so many different eye pleasing colors and various prints and patterns available for children’s mittens. There are also a “boiled” wool variety of mittens which is more commonly known as “felt” wool. The advantage of felted wool mittens is that it is water proof.
Some types of wool used to make mittens will be mixture of both wool and nylon. Usually it will be an 85% wool and 15% nylon mixture. One of the features that make wool very popular compared to other fabrics is that it as the ability to “breath” and there fore moisture and sweat will not build up in your hands. This is why wool mittens are popular with people who have to do outdoor work in extreme cold.
From all this we can see that no matter what you age or gender is there is a type or style of wool mitten that will be suitable for you. Not to mention that they can be extremely cheap to buy. Wool after all is a natural product like cotton, which makes it attractive for those people who would rather use biodegradable products as much as possible for their clothing.
